In the 58th<\/sup> anniversary of the Triple Beatified His Holiness Pope Shenouda III\u2019s devotion as a monk, may the Lord rest his soul in peace among His saints, we publish this unique article titled: \u201cthe Ascetic Movement in the East: its Rise, Development and Spread in Egypt\u201d.<\/span><\/h2>\n

His Holiness wrote it in 2001 for the Council of the Middle East Churches, published by the Council in \u201cThroughout the History of Christianity in the East\u201d. We find that His Holiness Pope linked the beginning of Christianity and the life of martyrdom to asceticism and reclusion. He talked briefly about Saint Anthony, the Ascetic St. Paul the Anchorite, St. Pachomius the Father of Cenobitic Monasticism, St. Macarius and the Scetis Desert, as well as the relation between monasticism and priesthood.<\/span><\/h2>\n

It is a rare article which we publish so generations would benefit from it, His Holiness is truly the Father of this generation\u2019s monks.<\/span><\/h2>\n
