Locals looked on in amazement as the bell tower of their beloved church collapsed in front of their eyes.<\/span>
\nThe church in question is called the Sant Pere in the town of Rossell\u00f3, in the province of Lleida, which is Spain’s north-eastern Catalonia region.<\/span>
\nIt was built between 1756 and 1760. <\/span>
\nAn hour earlier the town council evacuated nine inhabitants from two nearby houses and thankfully nobody was hurt during the incident.<\/span>

‘We didn’t even let them pack suitcases, we told the families just to grab the most necessary items.’<\/span>
\nThe incident happened at 11am, after which fire brigades cleared the rubble with the help of police officers.<\/span>
\nMayor Abad has assured that the building has not been affected other than by some light damage from the rubble hitting its facade.<\/span>
\nThe two families have now returned to their homes to recover from all the Sunday morning excitement.<\/span>
\nUntil further notice, mass will be held in the rectory of the village.<\/span><\/h2>\n
