Queen Elizabeth II has held a historic meeting with Kirill, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, who is on an official visit to the UK to mark the 300th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church\u2019s presence there.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The meeting was held Tuesday behind closed doors in Buckingham Palace, the Queen\u2019s official residence in London, and lasted for about a half-hour, the Patriarch’s secretary, Alexander Volkov, said.<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cPatriarch Kirill told the Queen about the revival of the Church in Russia in the past 20 years, the construction of churches, the development of theological science, the growing number of dioceses, and in general about the spiritual growth in Russia,\u201d<\/em>Volkov said.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The discussion between the Patriarch and the Queen was also\u00a0\u201cdevoted to the position of Christians in Europe,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said, adding that\u00a0\u201cthe Patriarch is very enthusiastic about the results of this meeting.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cI am very pleased with the [results of] this meeting and I must say that I did not expect it to\u2026 take place in such an atmosphere and at such active level as it did,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>the Patriarch told journalists during a press conference at Luton Airport, near London.<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cThis conversation has made a very good impression on me, both intellectually and emotionally,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>the head of the Russian Orthodox Church said.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Patriarch also congratulated the Queen on her 90th birthday, which she celebrated earlier this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

He also said that he was\u00a0\u201cglad to see the Queen in the best of her health,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and congratulated\u00a0\u201cthe Queen, the Royal Family and the British people\u201d<\/em>\u00a0on that.\u00a0\u201cMonarchy is above the momentary political issues. It allows the British people\u2026 to rely on the full strength of their national tradition,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the Patriarch stressed.<\/span><\/h2>\n

He gave the Queen\u00a0the Icon of \u201cOur Lady Who is Quick to Hear.\u201d The Queen presented the Patriarch with portraits of herself and her husband.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Earlier Tuesday, Patriarch Kirill met Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the Church of England\u2019s most senior cleric, to discuss Christianity in Europe and those challenges the Church in Europe faces now, Volkov said.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Patriarch Kirill is on a four-day visit to London. It is his first official visit to the UK as head of the Russian Orthodox Church.<\/span><\/h2>\n

On Sunday, hundreds of people, including the Archbishop of Canterbury and Prince Michael of Kent, gathered in London\u2019s Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God and All Saints to attend a historic service conducted by Patriarch Kirill.<\/span><\/h2>\n

After the Service, Kirill addressed people who had gathered for the festivities, emphasizing that both the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of England play a critical role in international relations and peacebuilding measures, even under the current political circumstances.<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cThe Church is a community open to everyone, [it] erases all human controversies. Even a very rich man stands next to the poor one, high-ranking officials stand next to the common people. The Church should also play a role in international relations. Through faith, through the Church, the soul of a nation is manifested,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the Patriarch said.<\/span><\/h2>\n

It is the first time in 25 years that the head of the Russian Orthodox Church has visited the UK. Prior to this, Patriarch Alexy II, Patriarch Kirill\u2019s predecessor, visited the country in 1991, and before him the then-First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Alexy I, visited the UK in 1946.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Russian Orthodox Church has had a presence in Britain since 1716, when the Russian Embassy Church was set up on the orders of Tsar Peter the Great. In October 1962, the Moscow Patriarchate\u2019s Diocese of Sourozh was founded, which is the Russian Orthodox Church\u2019s official (and largest) branch in Britain and Ireland. A smaller group of followers also belong to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (RCOR), which was formed as a response to Bolshevik persecution of Christianity.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
