HH Pope Tawadros\u00a0II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the see of St. Mark headed on Monday, June 2, 2017, the plenary session of the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church, where the meeting began after the Mass service at the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center at the Cathedral.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

First: Decisions<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

1. Designation of Amshir 8\/February 15 of each year to commemorate modern-age Coptic martyrs<\/span><\/h2>\n

2. Establishment of a special department in the General Bishopric for Social Services to specialize in caring for the families of martyrs and confessors<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

3. Recognition of the monastery of St. Victor (Boctor) in Khatatba for monks<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

4. Reiteration of the previous decision: \u201cIt is not allowed for anyone to print, or reprint, or to use any rites books that are used in worship in the Church without the approval of the rites committee of the Synod\u201d (June 10, 1995 Session)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

5. It is not allowed to use any recording of Coptic hymns as a source or a reference without the approval of the rites committee of the Synod<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
6. The Committee of Medical Matters:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
a. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cThe Christian teaching clearly states that any believer is defiled only by sin.<\/span><\/div>\n
b. \u00a0 \u00a0Also, the human [body] \u201cis the temple of the Holy Spirit\u201d (1 Corinthians 6:19), which does not leave the person except in the case of dying in sin. Thus, the woman is pure and a temple for the Holy Spirit all the days of her life.<\/span><\/div>\n
c. \u00a0 \u00a0 However, due to the godliness and proper care (readiness) in partaking of the holy Mysteries (Communion), and abiding by the Tradition that has been handed down to us, it is fitting for a man or a woman to abstain from Communion in periods of physical unpreparedness*, except in exceptional cases for pastoral reasons as decided by the priest who is the spiritual-guide for the individual.<\/span><\/div>\n
d. \u00a0 \u00a0We also confirm that a woman is not prohibited under any circumstances from performing all other spiritual practices including: personal prayers, the liturgy, reading the bible, service, or being present in church.<\/span><\/div>\n
e. \u00a0 \u00a0 We also confirm that a new-born child (male or female) can be baptized at any day after the birth if necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
*Physical unpreparedness (i.e. bodily discharge of all kinds: nocturnal emission, menstrual cycle, post-birth bleeding, sexual intercourse)<\/span><\/div>\n

7. Confirmation on passing a pre-marital church-approved course and obtaining a certificate thereof from one of the approved centers is one of the conditions of establishing an engagement record<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Second: Recommendations<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

1- Care and Service Committee:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Synod committee for combating addiction recommended that each parish appoint a priest or servant to be in charge of addiction cases, encouraging the parishes that have medical centers or hospitals to build a special department for psychiatry. The committee also recommended that parishes raise awareness on the dangers of addiction for the different educational levels. The committee has also requested that priests and servants of both sexes get training on the talents of combating addiction.<\/span><\/h2>\n

2- Faith, education and legislation Committee:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The committee values the efforts of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II in the ecumenical relations and His Holiness’s signing the joint statement with His Holiness Pope Francis the Pope of Rome on Friday, 28\/4\/2017 and it was published in Al Kiraza magazine, issues 17 and 18 for the year 45 issued on Friday, 5 May 2017 – 27 Baramuda 1733 in pages 6 and 7 of the magazine. This was followed with an impressive celebration in which ecumenical prayers wre raised attended by His Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, Patriarch of Constantinople along with Their Holinesses, the Pope of Alexandria and the Pope of Rome and the Heads of Christian churches in Egypt at the church of St. Peter and St. Paul in honour of the martyrs of the church for this year. It was an eventful day for strengthening the ecumenical relations.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The committe has also assured that there has to be discrimination between the usual joint statements issued by Their Holinesses, the Head of the churches in their ecumenical meetings and between the official agreements on belief, which have to be approved by the Holy Synods of their churches.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
