Six people were arrested on Saturday for planning to carry out terrorist attack on a Christian church in Alexandria, Egypt\u2019s Interior Ministry said in a statement.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The statement said that one of the attackers was planning to detonate an explosive vest inside the church and another\u00a0to blow himself up when police arrived to the scene.<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to\u00a0the ministry, the attacks were set to\u00a0take place during\u00a0Eid al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of\u00a0Ramadan.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The statement added that security forces have been investigating the information they gathered, to develop an integrated plan, to chase the cell using all modern technological means, which resulted in confirming their involvement in a conspiracy to blow up a shop owned by a Christian in Damietta province back in April.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The detainees said the aim of these operations was to turn the Copts against the Egyptian government, divide the society\u2019s national fabric, incite strife and spread panic.<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cThe cell was traced in an apartment in El Awayed neighborhood in Alexandria where they were planning their attacks. The apartment was raided and six, including the two bombers, were arrested.\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n

Two suicide belts and six detonators were also seized.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Attacks on\u00a0Egypt\u2019s Coptic Christians have become increasingly common since\u00a0the toppling of\u00a0the country\u2019s long-time leader Hosni Mubarak in\u00a02011, prompting a mass exodus of\u00a0Christians from\u00a0some rural towns.<\/span><\/h2>\n

In May, gunmen attacked a bus of\u00a0Christians heading for\u00a0a monastery in\u00a0Central Egypt, killing at\u00a0least 29 worshipers, according to\u00a0media reports.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Earlier, two suicide bombings at\u00a0Palm Sunday services in\u00a0April killed at\u00a0least 46 people in\u00a0the northern cities of\u00a0Alexandria and Tanta.<\/span><\/h2>\n
