At the dawn of Sunday, the Triple beatified, Anba Epiphanios, Abbot of St. Macarius (Abou Makar) Monastery at\u00a0Wadi Natroun, departed at the age of 64 years.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Anba Epiphnios is considered one of the disciples of late Fr. Matta El Masken,\u00a0and took over the monastery in 2013 when late Anba Mikhael, Metropolitan of Assiut, expressed his desire to leave his position as the head of the monastery due to his age,93, and his health and secret ballot\u00a0took place and\u00a0the monks\u00a0of\u00a0St. Macarius (Abou Makar) monastery (100 monks) voted on Sunday, February 3, 2013 to elect\u00a0the Abbot of the monastery.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Voting was taken in the presence of the secretary of Pope Tawadros,\u00a0Fr. Angelos, and the result was the selection of Monk Epiphanios\u00a0alMakary by\u00a0the majority of votes, according to the statement of His Holiness Pope.<\/span><\/h2>\n

This choice was supported by Anba Mikhael, who presided over the monastery for about 65 years before his departure, with a written recommendation received by monk Epiphanios by hand, and in turn handed it to Pope Tawadros.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Church\u2019s statement, described Anba Epiphanius as an honorable monk and scholar, declared that his death was shrouded in ambiguity, and thus the authorities concerned were notified. \u201cInvestigations are now ongoing,\u201d the statement said, \u201cand we await the outcome.<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cThe Church will announce in time arrangements for his funeral and burial.\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n

The statement said that Pope Tawadros mourned in Anba Epiphanius a true monk whose life was steeped in meekness and humbleness; also a scholar who possessed a wealth of knowledge that fruited research and publications in various branches of ecclesiastical studies. The Pope prayed for peace for his soul, and comfort for the St Macarius monk assembly and all who loved the late Abbot.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Preliminary investigations suggested that an unknown person may have hit the Bishop\u2019s head with a sharp instrument as he was leaving the monastic cell, which is a domed building monks frequently visit for worship, usually in remote areas.<\/span><\/h2>\n

The bishop\u2019s body was transferred to the morgue of Wadi Al-Natroun General Hospital. The prosecution has appointed a forensic doctor for the autopsy, to help confirm the cause of death and the instrument used in the incident.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Meanwhile Major General Alaa Abdel-Fattah has formed an investigative team to analyse the incident, and ultimately arrest whoever is responsible.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
