Ambassadors and Officials Receive HH Pope Tawadros II in Canada’s Airport
His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, arrived in Canada last Wednesday, as the third leg of his pastoral trip to Holland, Switzerland and Canada. HH Pope Tawadros II was warmly welcomed on both the official and popular fronts, during his visit to Canada, where the first to receive him at the Toronto International Airport were acting Egyptian Ambassador, Canadian Minister of Employment, and a large number of Canadian officials, along with the Coptic Orthodox Church in Canada’s congregation, prominent Bishops and Metropolitans.

Boules Halim announced in a statement that Mr. Jo Daniel, member of the Canadian Parliament offered his congratulations to His Holiness, on the passage of 50 years since the Church in Canada commenced ministry. His Holiness witnessed children and youth choirs’ performances of hymnals and hymns at the Church on the occasion of his visit to Canada. His Holiness Pope Tawadros II also handed out the trophies of the Al-Keraza Carnival to competitors.

The mayor of Markham, Canada, Mr. Frank Scarpetti, had brought the permit to build St. Mary’s and Abba Samuel the Confessor’s Church, handing it to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II.

His Holiness attended at the outset of his visit to Canada a celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of founding the first Coptic Orthodox Churchin North America, the St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The celebration included consecration of St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, built recently in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which will be the largest Coptic Orthodox Cathedral outside Egypt, and the second largest cathedral in Canada. A number of public officials attended the occasion, including Mayor Frank Scarpetti, mayor of Markham, and other personalities from the coalition government and provinces, and councils and leaders of neighboring communities. Worth noting, St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church was founded in 1964 at the hands of His Holiness Pope Kyrillos [Cyril] VI, who ordained the Very Reverend Father Marcus Marcus as the first Coptic priest in all of North America. At the time, Father Marcus was living in Toronto, and serving Copts in the entire continent single-handedly for around three years in the sixties.
