His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the see of St. Mark, inaugurated 50 years old church in elSiyouf area in Alexandria on Saturday.
Participated in the opening prayers and the Mass Their Eminences Anba Kyrillos Ava Mina, Bishop and Abbot of St. Mina Monastery in Mariout, Anba Salib, Bishop of Mit Ghamr and Daqados, Anba Karas, General Bishop of Mahalla, Anba Paveli, General Bishop of Montazah Churches and in charge of Youth Service in Alexandria, Anba Hermina, Bishop of Ein Shams and Mataria and Anba Illarion, Bishop of Western Alexandria.
The church dates back to 1962 when St. Pope Kyrillos VI visited the land allocated to the church and blessed it. He ordered that the land size be doubled and paid its price in cash and the land was placed under the possession of St. Mina monastery. The church was built in 1968 and at the dawn of April 24, 1970, His Holiness held the Mass service and named the church St. Athanasius the Apostolic.
HH late Pope Shenouda III visited the church on May 25, 1972, while His Holiness Pope Twadrous II visited it on 17 August 2014.
Due to the expansion of service in the church, the church has been reconstructed and expanded and a building of services attached to it was constructed, the church has been re-inaugurated.
