Locals looked on in amazement as the bell tower of their beloved church collapsed in front of their eyes. The church in question is called the Sant Pere in the town of Rosselló, in the province of Lleida, which is Spain’s north-eastern Catalonia region. It was built between 1756 and 1760. An hour earlier the town council evacuated nine inhabitants from two nearby houses and thankfully nobody was hurt during the incident. Shocked onlookers watch as church bell tower collapses
‘We didn’t even let them pack suitcases, we told the families just to grab the most necessary items.’ The incident happened at 11am, after which fire brigades cleared the rubble with the help of police officers. Mayor Abad has assured that the building has not been affected other than by some light damage from the rubble hitting its facade. The two families have now returned to their homes to recover from all the Sunday morning excitement. Until further notice, mass will be held in the rectory of the village.
