Foreword
Pope Theophilus is one of the Church fathers and teachers, he was known as the man of profound wisdom and outstanding bravery, he is the father of many disciples and one of the most prominent authors of the Church.
In this sermon, the Pope urges the entire church to pursue the life of repentance. He wonders: “is there anyone who does not desire to be a companion of repentance, to refrain from evil issues that make hearts blind, incapable of observing the wondrous light?”
He explained: “Repentance allows man to stretch his wings as an eagle, flying upwards to heaven through its spiritual virtues.” He asks those without repentance: “Upon defending yourself, what would you say? You, who have borne the holy names given to the priests and monks, yet you despised the commandments of God?! There will curse you the sinners who incur the reprisal, telling you: “we had to but commit sins, because we indulged in the world lusts and pleasures, going astray due to the stumbles of our fleshly desires, while you, what are you doing here? Why do you suffer such endless pains? Aren’t you the ones who wore the garments of godliness in the world? How shameful will they be in the other life…!”
He pleads: “Dears, God does not wish us to be in such state, so, let us fight as much as we can, in order to obtain the glory in the eternal life where the rows of saints.”
