We previously tackled the issue of spiritual depth, that is, the secret of man’s inner peace in our troubled world, his reasonableness in dealing with life’s obstacles and honesty in treating people. A spiritual person would always know his target and he is able to resist any temptation whatsoever. Thus, he is known for his firmness.
As we tackled the issue of depth in our life, we are going to discuss “choices”, how they have an impact on our present and future and how we should make a sound choice. Man’s life is nothing but a sequence of choices throughout each and every day of his life. A person may not hold responsibility for his choices since childhood, but he surely holds it in his youth and ripe age. Man’s joy or misery is in his choices as we sow what we reap.
A sound choice is the natural result of deep thinking and good judgment. The first step to reach a sound decision is thinking carefully. A sensible person would always foresee the results of his choices in the long run. He studies all the positive and negative aspects of the situation along with the possible alternatives. As a result, he never makes an impulsive decision. As it is said,
Had you have a sound mind, great foresight you would gain
As out of corrupted mind, hasty decisions made
in vain
Moreover, there is a critical moment at which a choice should be made, a sound person knows how to determine it and he also realizes the importance of the factor of time and its great influence while reaching a wise decision.
A wise person should have a foresight, thus he makes his decisions accordingly not allowing a lure of fake happiness or temporary victory to alter his course. I recall a saying by H.H the late Pope Shenouda III “A deep person is distinguished by his foresight, thoroughness and discernment. He is an informed person who prefers to think thoroughly of a matter and study all its possible consequences along with his deep knowledge that is shown when discussing any topic.”
