Anba Ermia Conveys Pope Tawadros’ Greetings to Azerbaijan’s Prime Minister at the Religious Leaders Summit
His Grace Anba Ermia, General Bishop and Head of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center, led a distinguished religious delegation in a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Prime Minister Ali Asadov on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, during the Global Summit for Religious Leaders on Climate in Baku. Anba Ermia conveyed the greetings of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, and offered congratulations for the success of the summit.
Anba Ermia expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality, commending the well-organized summit. He emphasized the strong Egyptian-Azerbaijani relations, particularly following President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s visit to Azerbaijan, where several cooperation agreements were signed across various sectors. This was followed by a visit from the Azerbaijani President to Egypt, which further reinforced bilateral ties between the two nations.
Anba Ermia added, “We have full confidence that COP29, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, will reflect Azerbaijan’s prestigious standing as a great nation with a rich history and will serve as one of the most significant global platforms to address environmental challenges and climate change.”
Azerbaijan’s Prime Minister Commends Egypt’s Role in Climate Change Efforts in Meeting with Anba Ermia
Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov praised Egypt’s leadership in climate change initiatives, especially its successful hosting of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022. He acknowledged the concerted efforts of all Egyptian institutions in preparing for the conference and expressed confidence that the relationship between Egypt and Azerbaijan will continue to grow stronger.
The Egyptian delegation included notable religious figures such as Professor Dr. Mohamed Al-Duwaini, Deputy of Al-Azhar representing the Grand Imam; Professor Dr. Osama Al-Azhari; the Minister of Endowments; Dr. Nazir Ayad, Grand Mufti of Egypt; Ambassador Hisham Naji, Egypt’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan; Dr. Ibrahim Negm, Secretary-General of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide; and Mr. Mahmoud Al-Galad, Assistant Minister of Endowments for Media Affairs.
It is worth mentioning that Anba Ermia arrived in Baku on Monday to participate in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Upon his arrival, Anba Ermia highlighted that the destructive effects of climate change are no longer confined to any one country or region. Extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, and storms, now pose a serious threat to global community stability and ecosystems.
The conference is expected to host over 100 heads of state and government, alongside notable figures, thousands of experts, journalists, climate activists, and representatives from companies and non-governmental organizations. The event will take place from November 11 to 22.
