The Coptic Orthodox Church, in collaboration with the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa, dispatched to Ethiopia a medical mission convoy from 12 to 21 October. The mission included 14 specialists in spine surgery, who operated on at least two patients a day; each operation taking no less than six hours.
Kamal Ibrahim, prominent Egyptian Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Loyola University in Chicago, headed the medical mission of 14 surgeons. According to Dr Ibrahim, the current visit to Ethiopia is the fourth in three successive three; he and his team hope to establish the first medical centre for spine surgery in Ethiopia some time in the near future.
Egypt’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Abu-Bakr Hanafi noted that the Egyptian convoy’s visit aims not only to operate spine surgery but rather to transfer experience to Ethiopian doctors, especially given that such surgeries are only performed in Egypt and Ghana in the African continent.”
