During the course of our life, not only do we influence others, but we are influenced by them as well. The most significant influence is that of one’s parents. A sage once said, “My mother is invaluable, and my father is unrepeatable.” Mothers are kind and loving. Because they spend most of the time with their children, they have a deep impact on their characters: be it positive or negative.
A glimpse on history makes us realize that great people were immensely impacted by their mothers. The mother of Alexander the Great played a crucial role in shaping his life, having assigned his mentorship to Aristotle after his father Philip II had died. Thus, he continued to struggle until he established one of the world’s greatest empires that stretched from the Ionian Sea westward to the Himalayas eastward.
Likewise, should we read the account of Napoleon Bonaparte, we will know that his mother impacted his life exceedingly, which is why he said, “I owe her everything. She reared me well, gave me from her pride and taught me how to judge matters well.” Thus, he learnt bravery, strength of will and perseverance from his mother.
Mothers’ roles are not bound to shaping the lives of kings and emperors, for they also reared geniuses in all fields. For instance, Thomas Addison’s mother took care of him so well that his ingenuity showed itself clearly. He became the inventor whose patents counted the largest in number in the United States of America. Also, he became the third of great men who influenced human civilization. Addison discloses the secret of his greatness, saying, “My mother made me. She respected, trusted and made me feel I was the most important person in the universe. Hence, my presence was crucial for her. I pledged I would never let her down in like manner she never let me down.” Another mother reared a great leader who was able to free his country from colonialism. This is Gandhi’s mother who dedicated her life for her family and faith. She was exceedingly kind and loving. She taught her son sincerity and caring for others, only to become the “great soul”.
On the occasion of Mother’s Day, we wish all mothers the best, for through their great love, they have always made men out of children. These men have always shaped history and civilization.
