We tackled the reasons of happiness in life, namely, a heart that never hates and a mind that never worries. Today, we shall tackle the loss of happiness when the heart lacks in giving.
When we stop giving and caring for others, we prevent happiness from inhabiting them. Happiness seeps from one person to another. Thus, when you help others become happy, you feel equally and exceedingly happy and satisfied.
Solomon the Sage says, “Ship your grain across the sea; after many days you may receive a return” It is said that goodness and giving never die, even after man’s death. The good which one does never disappears with his death. Rather, it lasts. Also, the fruit of good and giving sprout during man’s life: for they give him strength and happiness first. Giving provides man with happiness on earth and in heaven. God rewards everyone according to his deeds. Whoever shows mercy is shown mercy; whoever fills others’ with happiness will have his heart filled with happiness. We spoke beforehand about several types of good which man can offer, like money, effort, advice, defending the wronged, protecting the weak, and giving hope to the miserable, and other endless forms of giving.
A beautiful thing to read about this subject is the true story of a sociology professor at Malaysia University who asked his students to make one person happy throughout the semester in order to take the full mark, provided that this person not be a family member and that the student present what he did before everybody.
The professor made an agreement with a Malaysian company to recognize the best ten students who made others happy. All the students got the full mark in that subject. One assignment concerned an Indian citizen, a medicine student who visited friends and colleagues, and even smiled. One student decided to make that Indian happy. So, he wrote him encouraging messages, put simple presents at his doorstep until that person’s life changed to be happier and more outstanding. Yet, before the first message, he had already decided to stop studying. Yet, after the care and support he was given, he decided to continue and overcome the hardships.
The best thing about this experience is that the students spread the happiness they imparted through the people who enjoyed them. This reverberated, and happiness seeped through the entirety of the society, making everybody smile.
How noble the soul that offers good to everybody, without discrimination or expecting anything in return is! It only cares about making everybody happy within its community or the world at large.
