Foreword
Saint Ambrosius, the Bishop of Milan is considered one of the prominent fathers of the Western Church in the fourth century. When he was ordained a bishop, he paid great attention to the pastoral work; he set an order to the public liturgy in his diocese Milano, leaving us a precious legacy of sermons despite his heavy obsession and suffering.
This sermon titled “The Birth of the Savior” is an explanation of the chapter of Christ’s birth as in the Gospel of Saint Luke the Evangelist. In his sermon, the saint tackles the reason for which Christ came to our world, the secret meaning of the gifts presented by the Magi, he also wonders at the faith of the shepherds, concluding his explanation by speaking about St. Virgin Mary’s purity and meekness, commending us to follow her suit in purity.
We introduce this sermon translated by Mr. Remon Youssef Rizq, Researcher at the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center from the English text, pleading for God to grant us understanding of the words of our father Saint Ambrosius, so our life would be fruitful, and we would rejoice spiritually at the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of our mother St. Virgin Mary and through the prayers of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II.
