Foreword
The Church arranged the celebrations of martyrs’ feasts, those martyrs who pursued the divine path, bearing with all patience and longsuffering the pains, loved their enemies and prayed for them. In this sermon, St. Augustine explains how are we engaged in a war with death and all its works, then he explains how our Lord Jesus Christ glorifies the martyrs, as He is the granter of strength in countering suffering, so we shall not fear out of our weak human nature or the severity of suffering.
This meaning is asserted by what we recite at the Introduction of the Creed: “Glory to You, our Master, our King, Christ, the pride of the apostles, the crown of the martyrs, the joy of the righteous, the steadfastness of the churches…”
May the Lord benefit us with the teachings and prayers of St. Augustine, Amen.
