Foreword
In the 58th anniversary of the Triple Beatified His Holiness Pope Shenouda III’s devotion as a monk, may the Lord rest his soul in peace among His saints, we publish this unique article titled: “the Ascetic Movement in the East: its Rise, Development and Spread in Egypt”.
His Holiness wrote it in 2001 for the Council of the Middle East Churches, published by the Council in “Throughout the History of Christianity in the East”. We find that His Holiness Pope linked the beginning of Christianity and the life of martyrdom to asceticism and reclusion. He talked briefly about Saint Anthony, the Ascetic St. Paul the Anchorite, St. Pachomius the Father of Cenobitic Monasticism, St. Macarius and the Scetis Desert, as well as the relation between monasticism and priesthood.
It is a rare article which we publish so generations would benefit from it, His Holiness is truly the Father of this generation’s monks.

بمناسبة العيد الـ 58 لرهبنة مثلث الرحمات قداسة البابا شنوده الثالث ـ نيح الله نفسه مع قديسيه.
ننشر هذه المقالة النادرة بعنوان: ” الحركة النسكية فى المشرق: نشأتها وتطوّرها وانتشارها في مصر “. وقد كتبها قداسته عام 2001م لمجلس كنائس الشرق الأوسط، ونشرها المجلس فى كتاب ” المسيحية عبر تاريخها في المشرق “.
وتجد فيها أن قداسة البابا ربط بداية المسيحية وحياة الاستشهاد بالزهد وممارسة النسك. وأوجز فيها عن القديس الأنبا أنطونيوس، والناسك الأنبا بولا السائح، والقديس باخوميوس أب الشركة، والقديس مكاريوس وبرية شيهيت، وعلاقة الرهبنة بالكهنوت.
إنها مقالة نادرة رائعة ننشرها ليستفيد منها الجميع جيلاً بعد جيلٍ، فقداسته بحق هو ” أب رهبان هذا الجيل “.
